OUR COUNTY
Summit County is the fourth most populous county in Ohio, with approximately 540,000 residents in 31 communities. Founded in 1840, Summit County has a rich history of innovation and cultural significance.
The county seat and largest city, Akron, is known as the Rubber Capital of the World, having been the home to the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Firestone, B.F. Goodrich and General Tire. Today, the region is represented by a wide variety of polymer-related businesses and the University of Akron hosts one of the top Polymer Science & Engineering programs in the country.
Summit County played an important role in the abolitionist movement; John Brown offered safe haven to escaped slaves at homes in Akron and Hudson and other safe houses on the Underground Railroad were located in Stow and Clinton.
Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in Akron by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, and the organization continues to celebrate AA Founders’ Day in Akron each year in June.
Summit County’s diversity is its strength. Its residents come from many ethnic backgrounds, including German, Irish, Italian, English, Polish, African, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Guatamalan, Indian, Chinese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese, Nepalese and many more.
SUMMIT COUNTY POLITICS
There are 369,000 voters in Summit County, of which approximately 34,000 are registered Democrats. However, the county has a long history of supporting Democratic candidates, having voted for Democratic presidential candidates in every election since 1932 except three times: for Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, Richard Nixon in 1972 and Ronald Reagan in 1984.
OUR PARTY
The Summit County Democratic Party (SCDP) is the primary voice for electoral politics in the county.
Our party is committed to the promotion of Democratic values and the election of Democratic leaders locally, statewide and nationally. To that end, our party engages in activities to raise funds for candidates and election activities, register voters, and support elected Democratic officials.
